You’re not alone, and it's ok if you don't know what comes next

"It's hard to describe the feelings of depression I guess. I wake up with a feeling of dread and negative thought patterns. Sunday nights are especially the worst knowing I have a new work week ahead of me. I finally manage to get out of bed and get ready for the day. People ask me how I'm doing and I say, "I'm fine." What else am I supposed to say?"

Being here right now, reaching out that hand to ask for support (even if it feels totally uncomfortable and unfamiliar) is something to feel so proud of. We also know it might be hard to feel anything positive or hopeful when experiencing a lower energy level and all the emotions that can come with depression. Oh and let's not even mention the huge eye roll that comes when people suggest just being positive… (yeah ok like it’s just that simple). There's no black-and-white path to healing, and no "right" way to go about such an intimate emotional experience. Simply opening your mind and heart to someone who can wrap you in care can be so damn empowering.

This is your space to find your way through, with a down-to-earth depression therapist

First, please know that there's no minimum criteria to meet here, and you sure as hell do not need a specific diagnosis, major depressive disorder, or clinical depression to ask for help. We also hold space if you're struggling with that weight of depression getting heavier by the day. While depression is something that so many people experience, it doesn’t look the same for everyone (and definitely doesn’t always mimic what you see on TV). It can show up like that unannounced guest you dread seeing, popping up unexpectedly and staying for god knows how long (you know the type). From the occasional waves of negative thoughts and bad days filled with an unshakable sadness to the longer term seasons of "how am I going to ever not feel this way anymore?" we want to welcome you to this place to breathe deeply and know you never have to walk through this alone.

At our core we shut down any thoughts that depression makes you broken. You are more than this one part of your experience, even if it does feel like different types of depression have taken over all the parts of you. We're here to listen fully to what brought you to this point, from your mental health needs to really understanding you on a deep level and seeing your full person, with all the complexities and beautiful quirks that make you who you are. Whether it's wondering how to feel more purposeful through work, battling out questions of intimacy post-break-up, coping with loss, or otherwise experiencing the "f*ck this, I just want to stay in bed" vibe, we hear you.

Partner with a MT therapist for depression

Depression can be situational y'all. Maybe you're moving through an unclear time of transition as a young adult or entering a new season of life. Or maybe you're feeling ultra sensitive to the clock, your age, and the timelines you always envisioned for yourself as you question your place and purpose in the world (ugh, these thoughts are SO REAL). Sometimes depression can come from a part of our story or things we've encountered such as loss or grief. It's not always easy to realize the impact your narrative has on emotions until we hard stop and claim the time to talk it out and fully understand it.

It's also hard because oftentimes we "know" we should do certain things to help us boost our mood, but depression has this way of robbing us of energy and motivation. It's a real catch-22 and its ok if that feels a lititle helpless and hopeless. That’s where therapists with huge hearts, years of experience, and a love for learning more can hold space for it all and guide you with different and evidence-based mental health treatment to support your whole person.

Inviting in depression therapy can look like:

  • Taking things slow to learn more about the nature of your depression

  • Genuine support to move through the hard times

  • Skills to empower you as you walk through life

  • Teasing out the feelings in your body

  • Learning which self-talk is yours and which is bullsh*t you sponged up from difficult past relationships or circumstances

  • Supporting your unique neurological activity and a healthier mindset

For Anyone Wanting a Closer Look at Depression Therapy

inding the balance between real talk and holistic healing

We truly devote ourselves to our craft and to your care. Rest assured, we will take our time to really get to know what's going on. Depression can look like seasonal affective disorder that pops around each year, or might be based on the time you're in such as postpartum depression. It can also be a time where you're having a major depressive episode that feels like it came out of nowhere without a history of serious mental illness or reason why. Here, you don't need that exact reason or understanding because we're here to meet you exactly where you're at. You'll find relief to be yourself and go at your own pace with our highly conversational approach, and get all the benefits of our empirically validated support through different approaches of psychotherapy that may come in to guide you along the way.

Curious about the technical stuff? We got you. Our team is always leading with the person, not the approach. We'll look at what would be most aligned to where you want to go, personal preferences you share, and your experience, pulling in the right tools and interventions spanning:

  • Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT)

  • Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy

  • Acceptance and commitment therapy

  • Talk therapy

  • Interpersonal therapy

  • Couples therapy and family therapy recommendations if supportive of the individual

An understanding space for all experiences

Y’all we’re making therapy as flexible as possible for you and your unique needs. You may need to get out of the house or office, and our Houston offices are here to offer you the chill vibes and safe space for session. You might also be pulled to stay home for a virtual session because right now that’s as much as you can give, and that’s ok too.

We are here to truly get to know you and be right by your side with in person and virtual sessions, based on what feels good. We’re here for the real talk, connecting to your unique story, and throwing any sort of generic depression treatment plan out the door as we embrace the way you want to heal. The most effective treatment is whatever feels like the right choice to surround you in support and not add any additional complexity that you just don't need.

But, what if it's existential depression?

There is always space for you to feel seen and supported at Modern Therapy with more severe depression. Take a moment to give yourself a bit of grace knowing this isn’t something wrong with you, and acknowledging a need for support is a true gift you can give yourself when you’re not sure where to go next.

Depression can be heightened when you’ve experienced any form of grief, or may introduce itself to your life if you’re walking through grief for the first time. You might also find yourself thinking a lot about the meaning of life, purpose, and connection to other people. That's why we say we work with existential depression, a type of therapy approach that can support you and meet you where you're at. I mean, who doesn't go through seasons of major questioning?

We feel so passionate about sitting with these experiences and creating that safety to talk about the things that can feel really painful to say out loud. Clinical psychology aside, you're sitting with humans who have often walked through their own treatment of depression or challenging moments that defined their passion to be here with you now. That's because we've seen how speaking openly can loosen the grip that emotions can have on day-to-day life, and lift that weight to make life a little bit easier to carry.

There are many types of mental health professionals out there, and we are here whether that's to be your care provider or to be a trusted referral source you can rely on.
